From what I've seen, it will not immobilize bosses (or any big enemies for that matter), but it seems to still do the damage. *imagines using crushing prison on archdemon* However, I like the spell. Takes one enemy out of the battle for a while and damages it. Good against groups, especially when they have mages.

My recommended order for you: 1. Arcane Warrior unlock is fairly deep inside Breccilian Forest. 2. Circle Tower gives you permanent stat boosts. 3. Blood Mage unlock can be done next at Redcliffe, but you may want to do Circle Tower first--doing Circle Tower first will give you an alternative solution to the situation you encounter at Redcliffe.

Naturally if you don't let yourself get arrested you can't break out from prison. Winning the battle, whilst not easy, isn't that much of a problem. You don't take them all on at once, you retreat to a room of your choosing to take on any idiot that follows you.
If your really having a hard time with her. Make sure you have a mage that can use Force Field and Crushing prison. When a portal pops up Force Field the baroness and have your party destroy the portal. Its helpful to have ANders and Valenna this way so you have to spells and you don't have to wait for one mage to cool down.
I personally prefer Crushing Prison and Curse of Mortality, as they are useful against many types of enemies, not just enemy spellcasters. sadinar 13 years ago #4 Nightmare is doable without a mage at all; while those spells do imo make the game too easy, what makes the game easy is having an excellent grasp on mechanics rather than any single ...

ummm casting force field on the tank when you're fighting say a Grand Dragon is extremely useful. so long as the tank taunts beforehand he should be able to maintain aggro. and then your magi can focus on killing the enemy instead of healing the tank.-i consider force field the most useful and versatile ability in the game.-blood wound takes 2nd place.

3) You can use it to dispel a crushing prison cast on one of your chars. 4) You can use it to interrupt an enemy spell or special attack (grab/overwhelm comes to mind). 5) You can even use it on fleeing enemies you want to surround or for better positioning.
One thing that some of you seem to forget is how CoC works on bosses too unlike the other ones you mention. CoC can keep white units frozen 24/7, yellow units giving them only about a second of freedom before you can cast it again, and orange units about 1/3-1/2 of the time supposing you recast it a bunch when you can.

Crushing prison will lock up targets and slowly damage their HP. Its used mainly to target the big baddies in parties. When you start getting mages you'll learn that this can be a life saver. If you want to lock targets up though paralyze and mass paralyze will do better jobs at it, but they don't near-kill their targets.
In order to get in there you have to do the Operation north of the Keep (may have to capture keep first and click on the banner next to the sulfur fields). That will open up a bridge which leads up into the mountains. There you will find a dungeon which will drop you into the locked area once you pass through it.

Using this, i normally go into battle with my arcane warrior casting crush prison, blood control, force field, mind blast, shimmering shield, glyph of repulsion, fireball/cone of cold and blizzard/inferno followed by all defense spells and finally combat magic which by then he will have practically everyone chasing him.
More or less if you're not a cunning rogue with maxed skill, you'll always run into locks you can't pick. I stopped bothering with rogues-as-lockpickers after my first playthrough, there just isn't enough to get to make it worth doing. 2. After that, you then purchase the entire creation tree, and that's basically healing Anders, since he cannot cast offensive spells while Panacea is up. Other good spells to grab are Crushing Prison and elemental weapons. Upgraded Crushing Prison can exploit Stagger, which is fantastically easy to apply.
It's pretty much the new Crushing Prison, since Crushing Prison was nerfed to uselessness. Similarly, we have to know about attributes, so we notice that (for example) +20% Def is junk while +25% Armor is good for Hawke (since you have really high armor anyway). I didn't like playing a mage though, because Carver can go suck an ogre.
